For almost a decade, Orkney has been at the forefront of marine renewable energy research and development and almost all technology types for wave and tidal energy conversion have been tested in Orkney waters via the European Marine Energy Centre in Stromness.

The development of a three port strategy incorporating Lyness, Hatston Pier and Copland’s Dock in Stromness was completed on time and on budget in support of wave and tidal energy development and in addition the Harbour Authority upgraded its Vessel Traffic Systems (VTS), and acquired further land assets for development all at a cost of £22 million. This was funded by the Local Authority, ERDF, and the Scottish Government.

Developing harbour infrastructure for wave and tidal energy technology deployment has been an interesting challenge, and the on-going demands of technology developers for technology deployment continues to challenge the harbour authority in a positive and creative manner.
