With a special Island Games category and over 450 entrants, the Doon the Coast 2025 photography competition was our best to date!

Throughout June and July, amateur photographers from across Orkney were submitting entries in the following categories:

  • Boats & Ships - From boats at sea to life aboard a ship, these images captured the comings and goings at Orkney’s ports and harbours.

  • Nature’s Wonders - Snaps featuring the natural wonders of Orkney’s coastlines.

  • Coastal Communities - Photographs of Orcadians in action, sharing snapshots of real life and people from their coastlines.

  • Young People’s category – For those aged 16 and under.

  • Island Games 2025 - The best pictures taken in and around the 12 different sporting and associated social events comprising the 40th anniversary Island Games.

Speaking on behalf of the judging panel, which included representatives from OHA, The Orcadian, The Island Games, Voluntary Action Orkney, and Orkney Photographic, Kristopher Leask, Councillor for Kirkwall West & Orphir, said:

“The panel were absolutely blown away by the standard and sheer volume of entries in this year’s edition of Doon the Coast. Across the categories, I think the amateur photographers have really captured what is special and unique about living where we do and our connection to the coast and sea.

It was a particularly special summer on Orkney this year, hosting the 40th Island Games. The entries from this category really capture the spirit of the Games and how islanders embraced being hosts. These images will help keep memories of the event alive with all of us.”
