New for this year, we launched the competition with three categories, and introduced a Young Person's category.
The winners for 2023 were:
- Nautical Category: Jennifer Watt with ‘Hoy Head’
- Nature or Wildlife Category: Myles Campbell with 'Oystercatchering the Sunset’
- Coastal Life Category: Michael Sutherland with ‘Ripples in the Sunset’.
They all received a Kirkwall BID voucher.
The winner of the Young Person's Category was Alfie Harcus, aged 11 with his photo, 'Summer at Scapa'. Alfie received a Polaroid Go Instant Camera. The two runners-up in this category also won a prize.
Each category was judged by one of our four local judges, including our Harbour Master, Jim Buck; Leah Seator who is the Editor of The Orcadian; Ross Flett from Orkney Seal Rescue; and Fionn McArthur from Start Point Media. As head judge, Jim decided the overall winners of each category from 12 shortlisted entries, who will all appear in our 2024 calendar.
'Doon the Coast' was open to anyone based in Orkney. The only criteria was that the photo must have been taken in the last 12 months in Orkney.
Jim Buck, Orkney Harbours' Harbour Master said: “The standard of entries this year may have even surpassed 2022, and it was a real challenge to choose the winners.
"Across the four categories, all of our shortlisted photographs perfectly capture what life here in Orkney is truly like, and to see our beautiful coastline through the eyes of Orcadians was fascinating.
“I would like to thank everyone who entered, and especially commend the high standard of entries from budding young local photographers. There was such imagination and diversity in their submissions which made the judging process really enjoyable.”
