Kirkwall Pier Traffic Management Changes

Changes are being made to vehicle entrance and exit arrangements at Kirkwall Pier.

The current exit on to Shore Street (between the car park and the Orkney Ferries building) will become both an entrance and an exit, with the current entrance from Harbour Street (between the Basin and the Orkney Ferries building) being closed off to vehicular traffic. Bollards will be put in place here which can be removed should a particularly wide load require access.

The changes should improve safety for a number of pedestrian groups including ferry passengers, general pier users and tourist visitors.

The new layout won’t affect the general operation of the pier and has in fact been used in the past on busy days, for example cruise liner days – and shown to work well.

Weather permitting, the works are due to start during the week commencing Monday 29 February 2016 and be completed by Friday 11 March 2016.

A simplified drawing of what is planned is shown below, if you would like to see a detailed drawing complete with signage etc please contact David Sawkins, Deputy Harbour Master: Strategy & Support, Harbour Authority Building, Scapa on 01856873636 or email [email protected]
