May 1st 2016

In temperate Spring sunshine. 4500 passengers from all over the globe enjoyed a day out in Orkney as the busiest cruise liner date of the 2016 season arrived. Two ships, the MSC Splendida and the AIDAvita arrived just before 08:00 and jointly delivered over 50 guided tours around the Orkney mainland and Shapinsay. The new 'bendy bus' configuration for the shuttle service between Hatston Pier and the Kirkwall Travel Centre transported over 2500 passengers into Kirkwall during the course of the day, and many came to admire the impressive poppy display at St Magnus Cathedral.

Michael Morrison, from OIC marine services said '' It is unusual to have such a busy day so early in the season, but the weather was in our favour and the tour coaches and shuttle buses were very busy from the moment the ships arrived until early evening. MSC Splendida will be returning on three further occasions during the season, and Aida cruise lines have a further 10 callls during 2016.

This season we will host 115 port calls, and for the 2017 season, we already have 126 port calls booked.''
