Relive the Tall Ships visit
AOP (Another Orkney Production ) is pleased to announce the release of its latest DVD, The Tall Ships Visit to Orkney 2011, filmed between July 15 and 19, when over 20 ships taking part in the Tall Ships Races 2011 from Waterford in Ireland to Halmsted in Sweden, visited Orkney.
The race leg from Greenock to Lerwick was called “Cruise in Company,” and allowed participating ships the chance to spend some leisure time in a port en route.
A highly-organized programme of events for the crews, visitors and locals alike was staged throughout Orkney over those four days.
One of the highlights was the “Tall Ships Challenge” where four of the Class A ships — the Eendracht, the Gulden Leeuw, the Sorlandet and the Statsrad Lehmkuhl — sailed from Kirkwall round to Stromness, through Scapa Flow, carrying some 750 passengers between them.
This was the first time that passengers had been able to sail on a Tall Ship other than as crew during a Tall Ships Race.
The DVD captures some of the excitement of those events over the weekend, including the four ships preparing to leave Kirkwall for Stromness.
There are also interviews with Michael Morrison of Orkney Marine Services, journalist Craig Taylor, and Captain Adam Jasser of the Polish ship STS Pogoria, a veteran of previous Tall Ships races, on her first visit to Orkney.
Whilst sailing in Scapa Flow, Captain Jasser and his crew, mainly students from Warsaw University, paid their own personal tribute to the sailors of HMS Royal Oak.
The music featured is The Orcadian Boatman’s Song by J. Stormonth, Farewell to Stromness, Hoy’s Dark and Lofty Isle by J. Aim, Greenland Whale Fishery, all arranged by A. Leonard and performed by the Song Shop Trio, and Here’s tae the Sea, a sea shanty specially written for the weekend by Sarah Jane Gibbon.
The DVD cover photographs are by John Wishart.
It was directed by Moya McDonald and John Hay and produced by AOP.
They are available from Grooves, Shearer’s, the Pier Arts Centre, the Herald Print Shop, the Orkney Archive and Orkney Museum.
