Vessels over 12 meters in length and arriving from out with Orkney should advise Orkney VTS when crossing the harbour limits. VHF radios should be set to channels 11 and 14. Ships navigating in the port should do so with caution, paying particular attention to tide flows and the traffic situation. On approaching within 1000meters of Stromness Harbour, vessels over 12 meters in length or certified to carry more than twelve persons, should contact “Stromness Harbour Radio” on VHF Ch.14. While in the port, these vessels should also advise “Stromness Harbour Radio” when they are securely moored and just prior to any movement they are about to make in the port.
Note: - the VTS system operated by Orkney Harbour Authority has radar coverage over the Kirkwall Bay, Wide Firth and Shapinsay Sound areas.
