Cruise Orkney Languaged Guide Course receives funding package.

 

Following a very successful recruitment campaign, Cruise Orkney Directors Amanda Jackson and Christie Hartley received news today that their Leader funding request has been approved.for their languaged guides training course.

With additional funding from Orkney Islands Council Marine Services and the Developement and Regeneration Division, the 12 successful course candidates will commence training this weekend the 20th March. This intensive course will provide a much needed requirement for languaged guides for the cruise industry and for Orkney tourism generally.

Candidates will also receive a further training course (along with another 28 establised english speaking tourist guides) for specialised training in cruise ship tourism. The World Federation of Tourist Guides Associations (WFTGA) will operate a course this summer in Orkney to train guides on cruise ship industry awareness and meeting the expectations of cruise ship passengers.

The language guide training course is being conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Nordic Studies whose Director Dr. Donna Heddle today said,

''The Orkney experience is not just about looking at objects and places, it is about understanding the lived experience of communities, past, present and future. Fully trained tourist guides, who can explain the cultural context of Orkney in a range of languages so that visitors from all over the world can have the full benefit from their visit and carry away lasting memories, are essential to this understanding. We are delighted to be part of this new project."
